Europe still prefers Android to iPhone, except US

The presence of the iPhone 5 help Apple dominate the smartphone market and managed to beat Android in the United States, according to the survey conducted by research agency Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, Tuesday (27/11/2012).

Kantar Worldpanel survey results during the 12 weeks to October 28, 2012, record sales of the iPhone 5 help Apple dominate the smartphone market in the U.S., which stood at 48.1%. While Android adrift thin with the acquisition of 46.7%.

"The last time we saw IOS (behind) overtake Android in the U.S. is when the iPhone 4S was released, and Apple managed to maintain his lead for three consecutive periods," said Dominic Sunnebo, Director of Global Consumer Kantar Worldpanel Comtech.

He predicted that the iPhone market share in the U.S. will grow to 49.3% and still excel in the next two periods.

The users of Apple products are still showing loyalty to the iPhone 5. Of the total sales of the iPhone 5 in the U.S., 62% are from the previous iPhone users, 13% of Android users switching to the iPhone, BlackBerry 6%, and a small number of buyers of the iPhone 5 is their first time to have a smart phone.

Apple may be in power in the U.S., but not in Europe. Kantar Worldpanel data shows Android still dominate the smart phone market in Europe until October 28, 2012. Google's operating system accounts for 74% market share in Germany and 82% in Spain.

Combined market share to Android in the top five markets in Europe rose to 64%, from 51% the previous year. While Apple's market share edged up only 21%.

"Germany remains a difficult market for Apple, with the percentage share of the market fell by 5.1 points compared to last year. Samsung Galaxy S III has taken nearly a quarter of smartphone sales in Germany for 12 weeks to drive sales of Android," said Sunnebo.

In Italy, continued Sunnebo, Nokia Lumia 610 managed to become the fourth best-selling smart phone for 12 weeks to October 28, 2012, and the Nokia Lumia 800 in the seventh position. This achievement is increasing market share of Windows Phone by 11.7% across Europe.
